How do you get spotlight to index an encrypted file vault? I checked on the “allow spotlight to index” box when it was created, but nothing is ever listed from that vault when using spotlight with it open. Thanks!

That doesn’t sound right. If you go into the Spotlight pane in Knox preferences, does it show that vault having Spotlight searches enabled? If yes, do you happen to have the vault listed in the Privacy locations in System Preferences > Spotlight?

Please email us at the helpdesk to debug this further if everything appears to be set up right but the results still don’t appear.

The File vault is checked in Knox spotlight preferences. It is not listed in the spotlight preference “privacy”.

Strange. If you toggle the Spotlight indexing off for the vault in the Spotlight pane of Knox preferences, and then back on again, do you see Spotlight starting to reindex the vault?

(Click on the Spotlight icon on the top-right corner of the screen to see what Spotlight’s doing.)

Thank you for your help. I clicked on the Spotlight icon right after opening the FileVault and it shows it’s “Calculating Time”. It does this each time the vault is opened and stops after several minutes, but then seems to make no effort to actually index anything. I have left the vault open for prolonged periods of time, and it never shows any of the files in Spotlight. FWIW, the vault is on an external HD and is about 300Gb in size.

Well, you might know! After I wrote the above, after opening my FileVault several times with nothing happening, the silly thing started indexing the vault when I opened it this morning! Took it about two hours, but seems to be working. I haven’t had a chance to really test it, but will let you know if things fail to work.

When the Knox vaults are indexed, does the index reside on the unencrypted HD, or is it saved inside the encrypted vault?
