I cannot backup to a memory stick, because the existing backup file already fills the drive. Knox would overwrite the old backup anyway, but it still complains about the drive being full.

This is actually by design; Knox does not overwrite backups but instead deletes older backups only after a newer one has been successfully stored. This is done to ensure that a working backup exists at all times, even during the backup process itself.
